I’m planning to translate a post I wrote about the Norwegian Child Welfare Service. In the original Norwegian entry I linked to a post where I wrote about our experiences with these people. Instead of translating that one too I will copy and paste some facebook messages my wife wrote, and link to them later. We tried very hard to resolve this peacefully, but that didn’t get us anywhere, and we saw no alternative to making this public. My wife used facebook and I used my blog. Here are the two last facebook messages:
PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ENCOURAGED NOT TO KEEP THEIR WORD IN MELØY KOMMUNE: UPDATE
Finally the conflict between the Ytreland family and the Department of Health and Child Protective Services in Meløy kommune, Nordland county Norway, over the matter of our mildly autistic, developmentally delayed, learning disabled daughter, has been resolved. Although an amendment was placed in our daughter’s medical records in February 2014, those are not the records that either new medical personnel in Meløy or medical personnel in other municipalities we might move to would see, so it didn’t solve the problem. As of today, the 21st of May, 2014, we have checked our daughter’s medical records and an amendment has been placed in her records in Halsa, stating that there was never any cause for concern over our child; some 14 MONTHS after we first mentioned this matter in an IEP meeting, in March 2013, where the village health nurse denied having had anything to do with this.
After we realized she was the one who started this, we, with the medical records in hand so she could not deny it, confronted her again in May 2013. After we saw Dr. Tande, on the 5th of September 2012, it took the two of them EXACTLY 24 HOURS to come to the conclusion that the reason our child was developmentally delayed was because I, and this is stated in the medical records on the 5th and 6th of September, the child’s mother, was neglecting her through failing to encourage her development. This caused us to be reported to The Child Welfare Service in late february/ early March 2013. It took 24 hours to create the problem vs.14 months (and much arm twisting), to straighten it out; you do the math.
They couldn’t even wait for the medical records from Tokke (the place we moved from) before jumping to conclusions. I checked more than once to see if they had corrected the problem as was agreed to in November 2013; neither Dr. Lars Tande nor the department head were willing to take the time and trouble to do the right thing until I wrote a facebook post about it. For 14 months we have endured abuse of power, callous unconcern, false accusations, racial discrimination and/or disability discrimination, and sheer moral cowardice on the part of people employed by Meløy kommune and charged with the health and well-being of the people who live here. The nurse, the doctor, the department head, the mayor should all be ashamed of themselves. I’m very relieved that this finally is over and will end this facebook update with some advice to other parents both in Meløy kommune and in all other kommunes across Norway:
If you are the parent(s) of a disabled child, parents of color or emmigrant)s), or disabled yourself, I strongly advise you to check your child’s medical records, very carefully. You can’t know what nonsense people have put in there until you do. I will be checking my daughter’s medical records frequently until she is 18. After all, it certainly never occurred to me that this could be a problem, until it was one.
I’m an African American married to a Norwegian and the disabled parent of a disabled child. Our daughter has atypical autism, multiple learning disabilities, fine and gross motor skills delays, and in spite of having followed all the advice ever given to us by experts, putting her on a gluten free, casein free diet, a multivitamin, omega 3s, and vitamin B12 (these supplements have been proven to improve the brain functioning of autistic children), we have still been accused of being neglectful parents. It’s only luck that our daughter hasn’t been removed yet and we live in constant terror of it.
The Norwegian Child Welfare Service, aided by public employees including, but not limited to doctors, nurses, ppt (The Educational and Psychological Counselling Service). psychologists, teachers, principals, police officers are very deliberately targeting immigrant, disabled, and poor families and basically stealing their children. If you think it’s not your problem because it isn’t happening to you, consider these to ideas;
‘All this is required for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing.’–anonymous
‘The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.’–Benjamin Franklin
I did some research about the Norwegian Child Welfare Service, and will post an article about it in a few days.
